In India to become a GP or a Family Physician, one has to enroll in a medical college and complete the Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) course, which is of four and a half years duration, after which one year of compulsory internship has to be done. On successful completion of the internship, the degree of MBBS is awarded. One can start Family practice after getting registered with the Medical Council of India, or the respective state medical council. Any one wishing to study further can go for the MD or MS course depending upon his or her choice for medicine or surgery. One can also go for the DNB course and gain specialist status. Family practice in India is also done by a lot of non-MBBS doctors, including graduates of homeopathy, ayurveda, and unani courses.
